The public service broadcaster engaged in a "significant breach" of media regulations by not revealing that the presenter of a documentary about Gaza was the son of a Hamas official, as determined by UK media regulator Ofcom.
An inquiry by the media regulator into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the film was "materially misleading".
The head of the BBC had earlier expressed regret, noting there had been "a major oversight in relation to truthfulness".
Ofcom has instructed the BBC to air a peak-time declaration about its decisions.
"Since this amounts to a major infringement of our code, we are instructing the broadcaster to air a statement of our determinations against it on BBC Two at 21:00, with a date to be determined," the regulator stated.
'Risk to Erode Credibility'
The authority's report said: "The inquiry we conducted found that the programme's failure to disclose that the voice's parent held a position in the Hamas-run authority was materially misleading.
"This implied that the audience did not have vital facts which may have been extremely pertinent to their judgment of the voice and the details he shared.
"Credibility is at the heart of the relationship between a media organization and its audience, notably for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.
"This error had the risk to damage the very considerable amounts of trust that the public would have put in a factual film from the broadcaster about the Gaza conflict."
The programme was removed from the online platform in February after the boy's familial connections emerged, and in July an internal BBC review determined it infringed the broadcaster's content policies on truthfulness.
A BBC spokesperson stated: "The authority's determination is in accordance with the findings of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a significant failing in the documentary in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on truthfulness, which reflects clause 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.
"We have apologised for this and we comply with the authority's determination in full. We will follow the directive as soon as the timing and wording are confirmed."
